Overview

The BA (Hons) Comic and Concept Art curriculum combines creative development with practical industry-focused study. Early learning includes visual design fundamentals, narrative development and digital outcomes before progressing into advanced creative workflows, concept story design, character and world-building, environmental storytelling and industry briefs. Students also work towards a digital portfolio or online showcase before completing a major final project involving pre-production, critical and conceptual development, and professional practice. Teaching can include lectures, workshops, tutorials, seminars, practical activities, video-based learning and educational trips. Assessment methods include individual and group presentations, reports, case studies, essays, portfolio work, reflective journals and experiential projects. The programme also develops research, communication, project management and professional creative skills relevant to contemporary comic and concept art practice.

The BA (Hons) Comic and Concept Art programme focuses on developing artists who can communicate stories, characters and imaginative environments through visual media. Students explore traditional and digital creative practice while learning how ideas move from early concepts and narrative planning to polished visual outcomes. Key areas include sequential art, narrative development, character and world-building, environmental storytelling, advanced creative techniques and professional portfolio development. The course also introduces students to industry workflows and project briefs, helping them understand how creative work is developed for sectors such as comics, games, film and animation. Delivered on campus in Hamburg and certified by the University for the Creative Arts, the programme was available as a three-year degree or four-year international route.
